Coexisting with Wolves
About
In Northern California, New Forests’ forestry investments, which total around 450,000 acres, are home to a recovering population of gray wolves, currently on the endangered species list in California.
Access and support to the California Wolf Project (CAWP) which is a joint research project between UC Berkeley, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and the National Geographic Society has been provided on these forests. The goal of this project is to better understand the social and ecological factors that shape wolf populations and inform management decisions that will support gray wolf recovery in California.
Key Initiative
CAWP’s monitoring and research began in June 2024 and will continue through 2026.
The major objectives this research will inform are wolf range and habitat use; prey and diet analysis; wolf occupancy predictions; carnivore densities within wolf areas.
Outcomes of this research will drive a better understanding of the social and ecological factors that shape wolf populations and inform management decisions that support gray wolf recovery in California.
Impact
- Supports the long-term recovery of gray wolves in California
- Enhances biodiversity outcomes within a commercial forestry framework
- Demonstrates leadership in balancing conservation and operational goals
